Unschooling and Other Sundries

A few days ago, I ordered a book that Madeline recommended (i think) called, The Unschooling Unmanual and man, have I been enjoying reading it! After having some wavering doubts about unschooling, this book has been just what the doctor ordered to reassure me that we’re doing the right thing. If you’re interested in picking up your own copy, click HERE.

Last night we had a sleepover with Iain and Ryan’s cousins who are in town visiting from PA. The girls were such a joy and everyone seemed to have a really good time. My brother-in-law said when he dropped them off, “The girls will be OUT by 9:30!” Well, they were last ones asleep! I ended up laying down with them to help them doze off and then there was nary a peep out of any of them until 8:30 this morning. Once they were all up, they gathered together on the sofa and watched The Magic School Bus and Peep.

And how cute is this?

That’s Pinky Pie and Cheep Cheep. They belong to the younger one. Too adorable!

The girls were kind enough to pose for a couple of snapshots, too!

Today, the boys’ beds are being delivered and they’re very excited about it. Iain has chosen a shade of green for his new room and I’m hoping to get that painted on Friday. We have quite a bit of cleaning to do in the room Iain’s taking so, if that doesn’t get done, we won’t be putting the beds together just yet.

This weekend, we’re celebrating Ryan’s 6th birthday. His actual birthday is not until the next week but my MIL suggested we combine Easter lunch and his b-day celebration since the whole family would be there. Except, now she’s not going to be there. She’s mad at me or mad at my sister, she hasn’t said which. The point is, she’s not coming to honor Ryan’s birthday. Still trying to figure out how to tell him about it because I want to be completely open about it. It doesn’t help that I don’t know the reason specifically but I have to tell him that she’s not planning on being there for him. Just trying to find the most gentle way to do that.

I can’t believe Easter is already upon us! How old were your kids when they stopped believing in the Easter Bunny and the like? Since easter snuck up on us this year, I’m completely unprepared! My sister and I are going out on Thursday, after my final check up with the doc, and we’re going to buy the Easter basket goodies.

Tomorrow I’m going to have a post about a drawing that Iain did and I can’t wait to share it with you! Please come back and check it out!

  1. Beautiful pictures of the kids.

  2. Thanks Treasia!

  3. Yes, your photos as of late are yummy!!! Thanks a million for your most recent action tip. They look like they might be the best fit (for me) yet! I gotta know….which, if any, actions have you been using on your recent photos? Will you share? I love the look of these!!

  4. Well, you are quite welcome! I came across them quite by accident today and immediately thought of you!

The actions I’ve been using are many! I have an older version of Photoshop so all the actions I have work in that format. I will email you and send you all the links to them though so you can see for yourself.

Oh and one of the beauties of homeschooling which I haven’t taken advantage of yet, is that you can buy software at a greatly reduced rate. Something for you to think about as your kids get a little older!

I will email you tonight or tomorrow.

  5. I love the pics of the girls!!! So cute.

  6. those pictures are great! Girls are always better posers for the camera lol.

wow…sorry to hear that your MIL can’t put aside her issues for the sake of a child. That is just sad. Theres a lesson on how hate can overcloud rational judgment and to never let things bother you so much and bottle up inside you that you don’t live life, eh?

I am jealous that you homeschool. I always wanted to, but had zero support and really didn’t know where to turn. I also had an only child and since I was such a young mother (16 when i had her) there weren’t many children in our lives either…I always worried she would miss out socially…but looking back on it I wish I had done it and was more proactive in finding play groups and such….sigh… hindsight….what a bi*^^

  7. I’ve been thinking about ordering that book. Sounds like I just need to get to it. Can’t wait to see the drawing!

  8. Deeg, it is sad and you’re right that there’s a lesson there. I could stand to learn it myself though as I’m not feeling exactly rational about the whole thing either. If she’s mad at me or my sister, that’s fine. We can take it. I could care less if she came and ignored us. Ryan is the one she’s punishing and that’s just pitiful. Oh well.

In regard to your homeschooling comment. It’s never too late to do it. You should talk to my friend, Carri (the poster after you) about it. There’s a link to her blog Three Plus Two on the left hand side of my blog. Also, go to http://www.sandradodd.com because I, of course, think Unschooling is THE way to go! lol 🙂

    Thanks for your comment!

  9. Carri,

What’s up? I did like the book quite a bit. I have only two complaints about it. It was quite short and much of the material was stuff that I had read on other people’s websites. BUT it’s nice to have it all in one handy reference and the small size makes it easy to find what you’re looking for.

    🙂

  10. The girls are adorable. Not too mention Cheep Cheep and Pink Pie. Funny how girls will sit and pose much unlike my little man. LOL.

I am so sorry about Easter and the birthday party. Family, the source of joy and perpetual sorrow.

  11. Whimsigal-I have a feeling if things don’t start changing here soon with my kiddo I may just reconsider the entire homeschooling thing lol. I will check out Carri’s blog…my daughter is actually a very good student. She is in the GATE program here and gets straight A’s. Thats the problem though-no matter what they do at school I don’t think she is challenged enough which in turn makes her quite bored and therefor she is starting to get into trouble…sigh
and thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment 🙂

  12. Sad about your MIL. If it were me, I wouldn’t say anything unless Ryan asked, then just be matter-of-fact. It’s not a drama unless you make it a drama, KWIM?

You do take wonderful pictures! Of course, you’ve got great subjects! 🙂

  13. Beautiful pics of those girls! So sweet…
